In this class, children will be exposed to the philosophical values of our school. In addition, concepts in Math, Language Arts, History, and Gardening are featured in this workshop. The children will be presented with a mathematical grid where they have to match coordinated pairs to create an outline of a Frida Kahlo portrait. Their outlines will then be transferred onto canvas and now the creative mind of each student will be in control. We will then come back to the scientific study of leaves which we collect in the garden and examine with the help of microscopes. Teaching Yoga to children helps them develop better body awareness, self-control, flexibility and coordination. Yoga has also been shown to help the hyperactive and attention-deficit child. These children crave movement and sensory/motor stimulus. Yoga helps channel these impulses in a positive way. Yoga poses that seem to work especially well are the warrior pose and tree pose. They help instill calm, confidence and balance. I get them to think about what the postures mean, to become like the postures -- strong and confident like a warrior. I use partner poses to develop trust. Working with each other on poses, the children develop team skills. It also fosters bonding.
